Brief History of Dewan Masyarakat Kota Kinabalu
The Dewan Masyarakat Kota Kinabalu (Kota Kinabalu Community Hall) is a historical building where many historical moments were held. The idea to build the community hall was conceived in 1953, a time when Kota Kinabalu city was still known as Jesselton. At that time, a competition was held to choose the best architect design for the building. The design of the building was to house a basketball court, that can be converted to 3 badminton courts and with a seating capacity of 800. The construction of the building took about four and a half months and cost over $280,000. In March 1958, the building was officially opened by the then Governor Sir Roland Turnbull.
